CATES SPRING 2010
PTSD and Substance Abuse: Understanding the Challenges Experienced by Returning Military Members and Their Families
[ CATES SPRING 2010 Brochure ]
Training Overview
These regional trainings are part of a series of research-to-practice trainings that have taken place in Northern and Southern California since 2004.
Purpose and Objectives
The battle may be over, but for many, the struggles have just begun. Returning military members often face bio-psychosocial challenges that undermine their ability to maintain healthy relationships and lead fulfilling lives. Community treatment providers are a key link when individuals and families begin to fray under these pressures. This training, the second in the series to focus on veterans issues, will examine the specific challenges returning military members, veterans, and their families endure, describe the manifestations of combat-related stress and substance abuse and how this may alter an individual’s clinical presentation, and identify appropriate assessment and treatment interventions.
At the end of the daylong training, you will be able to:
Opportunity for Continued Learning
In addition to participating in a face-to-face training session, you will be given the opportunity to continue learning about the scope of PTSD and substance abuse and the various challenges faced by returning military members and their families by participating in a series of monthly Webinars. Information regarding these follow-up sessions will be provided at each training session.
An Important Note Regarding the Scope of Training
The primary purpose of the spring 2010 CATES training series is to provide an opportunity for behavioral healthcare practitioners to learn about vital components of effective service provision to returning military members, veterans, and their families, and to network with existing community resources, local experts, and Veterans Service Organizations. While participants will not become experts as a result of attending this one-day training, they will enhance their understanding about the culture of the military, the consequences of combat, and learn how to create a veteran-friendly therapeutic environment, as well as develop an appropriate referral network, so that they may effectively engage and assist in the treatment of this population.

Attention All UCLA Customers:
Returned Check Fine Increases:
In order to better cover the cost of returned check processing to the University, UCLA will increase the returned check fee from $10 to $25 effective February 1, 2005. This amount covers the majority of the costs involved, is an industry standard, and is permitted by California law.
“Cash Only” Policy for Returned Check Writers:
Effective February 1, 2005, any person who has more than three checks returned unpaid to the University will be placed on a “Cash Only” basis (i.e. cash, credit card, cashier’s check, or money order) for all future transactions. A letter will be mailed to the current mailing/billing address on file if this threshold is met, and no future checks will be accepted. We are not responsible for delivery of mail or the accuracy of the address on file.
Enforcement of the “Cash Only” Policy:
Check payments made in person at the Administrative Main Cashier or the Remittance Processing Center will not be accepted from customers who have been placed on a “Cash Only” basis. Check payments mailed to the Remittance Processing Center by customers on a “Cash Only” basis will be accepted, but credit will not be posted to their BAR account for two weeks.
