Meeting the needs of returning soldiers and their families will present unique challenges for the health care system. Research shows that although services are available to meet these challenges, there are gaps in the services system.9
To help policy-makers in the State of Rhode Island ensure that their health care system is easily accessible and knowledgeable in order to care for returning veterans and their families, the ATTC of New England developed a Blueprint for Change entitled, How will be welcome them home? Addressing the needs of Returning Soldiers and their Families.
In this plan, six priority areas were identified, along with strategies and recommendations for achieving success:
- Establish an Interagency Coalition
- Develop Accessible Systems of Services
- Build Strong Communities
- Expand Screening, Assessment and Referral Activities
- Increase Knowledge about Available Resources
- Develop a Multi-pronged Effort to Address Stigma
