SAMHSA has proposed eight strategic initiatives related to substance abuse and mental health prevention and treatment services in recent years. Prominently included among them is a proposal to reduce health disparities within special populations; one of these special populations is women. Recent decades have witnessed a marked increase in research on the specific medical and psychosocial needs of women including extensive research on women funded by NIAAA and NIDA. SAMHSA initiated several grant programs focused on current prevention and treatment needs for women and initiated the development of Core competencies for mental health and substance abuse service professionals in working with women and girls. Nonetheless, many states have reduced specialty substance abuse and mental health programming for women within the past several years because of troubled financial situations, with the result that women continue to face substantial barriers to adequate prevention and treatment services, as well as health disparities.

This presentation will begin by reviewing data on the prevalence of substance use disorders in women of different ages, women from several cultures, and lesbian and straight women. The presentation will also review findings on consequences of substance use for women's physical and mental health, vulnerability to trauma, and familial and social consequences of abuse. Additionally, we will review several prevention and early intervention models of relevance to women. Finally, we will consider what is known about assessment and treatment models for substance use in women within a recovery oriented /comprehensive care model that emphasizes the value of case management.
