  All people providing care-giving services are susceptible to Compassion Fatigue, when the compassion that is often a significant part of the force attracting them to the services and supports they provide becomes tired – or even exhausted. Individuals providing Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) are particularly vulnerable. In this Webinar, we’ll explore roots of the vulnerability and some healthy protective dynamics for the peer workforce and strategies for caring for self.     Learning Objectives: A brief overview of Compassion Fatigue in the Peer Recovery Support Workforce · Articulate how all people providing care-giving services are susceptible to compassion fatigue · Help to address how individuals providing Peer Recovery Support Services (PRSS) are particularly vulnerable · Explore roots of the vulnerability and some healthy protective dynamics for the peer workforce and strategies for caring for self   Owen Dougherty grew up in Scranton Pennsylvania and through most of his adult life bouncing between Northern California and Chicago, IL.  He lived in the metro Atlanta Area of Georgia from 2005 until his retirement at the end of March. 2019. Owen holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and Philosophy from Temple University, Master of Divinity and Master of Christian Ethics degrees from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago and a Master’s degree in Organization Development from Loyola University Chicago. He provides training and technical assistance for organizations developing peer recovery support services as well as leadership development coaching to emerging leaders in these organizations

Tele-health systems for client services are becoming an expectation rather than an exception. Most SUD agencies are either already equipped with a telehealth option, or can quickly develop a telehealth plan to serve clients virtually.  This webinar will focus on the growing need for similar virtual services for Clinical Supervision. Various platforms will be reviewed and best practices will be discussed. With 25 years of clinical experience, Alan has been an active member of MINT ( Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers) since 2004, earning MINT Trainer Certification. He is an internationally certified clinical supervisor, a master addictions counselor, and a Leadership Challenge Workshop certified master. He is concurrently the trainer for South Carolina's most recent SBIRT (Screening, Bref Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) grant, as he has been for several SBIRT grants since 2009. Session Host : Lawrence Bryant, Ph.D., MPH, RRT, BSW, AAS A Little about Dr. Bryant:  As a member of the Georgia Department of Public Health Opioid Strategic Planning Multicultural Workgroup, Dr. Bryant brings a plethora of experiences dealing with substance use disorders through clinical practice, policy, and research. He has been successful in developing and implementing a statewide strategic plan for the state of Georgia in response to the opioid and prescription drug overdose epidemic. As a part-time Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University, Health Promotion Department, Dr Bryant has received funding from The Georgia Department of Public Health to do a needs assessment in support of the Statewide Strategic Plan for Opioid Abuse. Dr Bryant just receives certification in contact tracing and plans to utilize this knowledge to train other in this technique Dr Bryant continues to publish in the field of public health and holds dual positions in both public health and psychology at Capella University. Dr Bryant is also a registered respiratory therapist, fighting on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic in the field of pediatrics

Treatment providers, peer support communities, and community-based organizations in Region 4 are encouraged to register for free. ================================================================= Session Host : Sharon Hesseltine, BSW Sharon Hesseltine, BSW is President and CEO of Intentional Beginnings, LLC of Louisville, KY, providing consultation, facilitation, and training to strengthen services for pregnant and parenting women who have substance use disorders, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma.  Sharon received her Bachelor of Science in Social Work from Southern Illinois University in 1981, and in 2011 completed a post-graduate Certificate in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health from the University of Minnesota.  For over 30 years Sharon has worked in Public Health and specialized in early childhood development, women’s health, and addiction. Her career has ranged from providing direct services to women through managing two sober living residences to designing and facilitating statewide and local collaborative initiatives that call on her skills in public policy, strategic planning, cross-sector collaboration, program assessment, and marketing.  She has been a national trainer and facilitator for multiple organizations including the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, ATTC for ROSC, and Great Kids Inc. for the Growing Great Kids Parenting Curriculum. She has most recently developed SUD specific training for Peer Support Specialists and Supervisors in Kentucky and provides TA for the SAMHSA funded Opioid Response Network Technical Assistance Consortium.   Sharon is also a woman in long-term recovery and brings a unique mix of experience and science to her presentations.  She is passionate about developing the capacity of communities, organizations, and individuals to better meet the needs of individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance use disorders.

To engage in a discussion and address trauma response as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic including survivors’ guilt and isolation. To define vicarious trauma and how it affects the caregiver. =========================================================== In the United States, 61 percent of men and 51 percent of women report exposure to at least one lifetime traumatic event, and 90 percent of clients in public behavioral health care settings have experienced trauma. If trauma goes unaddressed, people will have poor physical health outcomes, and ignoring trauma can hinder recovery for those with mental illnesses and addictions. To ensure the best possible health outcomes, all care — in all health settings — must address trauma in a safe and sensitive way. =========================================================== Presenter: Denice Morris MS, MEd, CADC Denice attended Tuskegee University and Miles College receiving her bachelor’s in criminal justice and later received a double master' from the University of West Alabama in Counseling Psychology and Adult Continuing Education. Denice began her career in the substance abuse treatment field at the Aletheia House residential treatment center in Birmingham, AL in 2004. She has served as Clinical Supervisor and later Director of Re-Entry services at Gadsden Re-entry and Correctional Facility in Tallahassee, FL. Her current occupation is with the Alabama Department of Mental Health Substance Abuse Division as an Adult Treatment Program Coordinator for certified substance abuse treatment facilities across the state and is a nationally certified trauma responsive trainer.

Mobilize the entire African American community to support recovery.     Mark Sanders, LCSW, CADC, is an international speaker, trainer, and consultant in the behavioral health field whose work has reached thousands throughout the United States, Europe, Canada, Caribbean and British Islands. Mark has been a certified addictions counselor for 34 years. Mark is co-founder of Serenity Academy of Chicago, the only recovery high school in Illinois. He is past president of the board of the Illinois Chapter of NAADAC. He has had a 30-year career as a university educator having taught at the University of Chicago, Illinois State University, Illinois School of Professional Psychology, and Loyola University of Chicago, School of Social Work.
