Problem gambling can have devastating impacts on individuals, families, and communities. It can have an impact on personal finances, individual well-being, family and business relationships, employment, mental health, suicidal thoughts or attempts, and more. Compared to other addictive disorders, problem gambling is associated with a high rate of suicide ideation and suicide attempts. To help behavioral health providers address this addiction, the Northwest ATTC has partnered with the Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling to offer this 3-hour workshop. To be effective in their work, behavioral health providers and others offering counseling for those negatively impacted by gambling need specialized training. This session will offer a broad overview of problem gambling. It will include an overview of gambling, problem gambling, and Gambling Disorder. Problem gambling will be considered through the lens of cultural diversity. We will also consider how problem gambling relates to other co-occurring disorders. Participants will gain an increased understanding of this topic and learn about tools for how best to screen for problem gambling and make referrals to treatment. Information on how to pursue Gambling Counselor Certification will also be provided in the session. This training is designed as a high-level introduction to the current state of commercial gambling, responsible gambling, problem gambling, and Gambling Disorder. It is appropriate for behavioral health practitioners, prevention specialists, peer recovery coaches, and others who would like to add to their skill base to be able to better address problem gambling and Gambling Disorder.

Presenter: Tana Russell, SUDP, NCTTP, WSCGC-II, CGT, Assistant Director, Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling Gambling has, in some way, been a part of most cultures since time immemorial. And in the present day, video gaming is a ‘global uniter’ in many countries around the world. This session will focus on lessons learned on important cultural considerations for behavioral health providers to take into account as they have gambling- or gaming- related conversations, be that with clients or the general public. The intention of this session is to equip the behavioral health provider with tools to be able to integrate conversations about gambling and gaming, by creating a “safe space” to talk about them with cultural humility and sensitivity.  Learning Goals: Discuss the role of gambling and gaming in various cultures (with attention to such factors as race, age, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.) and cultural influences on views of games, luck, and fate.  Discuss the cultures that exist within the context of gambling and video gaming, and problem gambling impacts on marginalized populations.  Discuss lessons learned in cultural humility and sensitivity, the importance of language, pronunciation, imagery, and more.

Presenter: Tana Russell, SUDP, NCTTP, WSCGC-II, CGT, Assistant Director, Evergreen Council on Problem Gambling Many behavioral health providers working with people who have substance use and mental health challenges report feeling under-equipped to effectively provide problem gambling screening and referral services in their practice and programs. This session seeks to answer common questions and reduce barriers to successfully integrate problem gambling conversations, through screening, brief interventions, and referrals to specialists. In this workshop, participants will receive an overview of evidenced-based and validated gambling screening instruments, best practices when it comes to screening, and skills practice. Learning Goals: Be able to choose from a variety of validated gambling screening instruments to select an appropriate tool(s) for use in your practice. Be able to use at least 3 or more screening best practices when conducting a problem gambling screen. Be equipped with a list of referral resources to provide to clients who may need either further assessment by a specialist or community-level support for gambling-related problems.  1.5 CE credits available!

Education around problem gambling fits nicely into standard education curriculum, such as treatment of substance use disorders, cross-addiction and co-occurring disorders, communication skills, improving relationships, and more. This session will provide core guidance on topics to cover when providing problem gambling education, as well as make available resources for educational materials, including videos, worksheets, workbooks, and more. The session will address, and allow for discussion, related to opportunities and barriers to establishing a gambling-recovery-safe professional culture.  Learning Goals: Receive guidance and explanations of topics to cover when educating SUD/MH clients on problem gambling.  Review educational resources that can be used within existing educational curriculum or to design your own.  Discuss opportunities to establish a professional agency-wide culture that reduces stigma around gambling-related harms.  1.5 CE credits available!
