Research has shown that motivational incentive programs that use low-cost reinforcement (prizes, vouchers, clinic privileges, etc.), delivered in conjunction with on-site urine screening promotes higher rates of treatment retention and abstinence from drug abuse. This training is based on the positive research outcomes and lessons learned from the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study, Motivational Incentives for Enhanced Drug Abuse Recovery (MIEDER). The tools contained in this training are designed to build awareness of motivational incentives as a research-based adjunct to therapeutic strategy within the addiction treatment field. This training includes reviews of history and research pertaining to motivational incentives; provides suggestions for overcoming barriers to implementing motivational incentives; and offers an array of supporting materials and documents with practical applications.

This training is in response to the South Dakota Criminal Justice Motivational Incentive Workgroup focusing on the implementation of a statewide motivational incentives intervention for the Criminal Justice Initiative Program. Motivational Incentive programs can enhance treatment outcomes and facilitate client recovery. This training will focus on understanding the results of NIDA’s Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study that used low-cost incentives to increase patient motivation for treatment and recovery, identify key behavioral terms, definitions and principles underlying successful Motivational Incentive programs. Additionally, the training will provide a step by step implementation based on the statewide plan including identifying set target behavior, choice of target population, choice of incentives, incentive magnitude, frequency of distribution, timing of incentive and duration of intervention. There will be hands on group work on how to implement this program in your agency, monitor fidelity and problem-solve when issues arise in implementation.

Promoting Awareness of Motivational Incentives (PAMI) is based on the positive research outcomes and lessons learned from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Clinical Trials Network (CTN) study, titled Motivational Incentives for Enhanced Drug Abuse Recovery (MIEDAR) along with feedback from the Fishbowl Method. This product (revised 2011) is the most comprehensive awareness resource available for Motivational Incentives to date. It includes a detailed PowerPoint presentation highlighting Dr. Nancy Petry's Fishbowl Method, and a testimonial-based video which speaks to any audience about Motivational Incentives. Supporting this multi-media product is a wide variety of research-based resources which serve as a tool kit to help generate both funding and practice ideas. See for yourself how the Fishbowl Method can both energize staff and retain patients.         Watch Video Below: Using Motivational Incentives
